Installation instructions for C-4 to Y-Block kit

This kit will fit any of the Ford Y-Block engines, 239-256-272-292-312

Kit includes:

·         New bellhousing to adapt engine to transmission

·         New flexplate and spacer. FLEXPLATE IS AT THE BOTTOM OF BOX.

·         Kit is designed to utilize Ford starter for 1965-76 360/390 FE style engine. Correct drive gear is provided to ensure proper engagement. Replace gear with one provided.

·         Pilot bushing to adapt torque converter to Y-Block crankshaft

·         Flywheel mounting bolts and shakeproof washers

·         Converter to flexplate extension studs

·         Bellhousing to block bolts

·         Starter spacer

Recommendations:

·         It is recommended that you use a C-4 with dipstick in case

·         Early C-4’s had “Green Dot” style valve body. P R N D2 D1 L. These should be avoided

·         Choose C-4 with P R N 3 2 1 type valve body, 1967 or later

·         Use transmission with desired shifter type. ie: Column shift or floor shift

·         This kit uses a standard C-4 with 11” torque converter. Small Mustang II converter will require additional holes in flexplate. 12” converter was used on dipstick in pan Van transmissions. These will not fit in housing.

·         Converter splines changed from 24 (1964 ½-69) to 26 in 1970. Ensure correct fit of converter. 24 spline # 26-2 or F-18. 26 spline #26-3.

·         Use 26 spline for racing applications

·        Heli arc original drive studs on torque converter. These are only spot welded on.

·         Do not attempt to install converter on flexplate then attach to transmission. Front seal or pump damage are likely to result.

 Installation:

·        Heli arc original drive studs on torque converter. These are only spot welded on.

·        Remove old transmission, converter and flexplate from vehicle

·        Heli arc original drive studs on torque converter. These are only spot welded on.

·        Install spacer ring on crankshaft, then flexplate using 12 point bolts and shakeproof washers. Torque to 50/60 ft. lbs. Offset bolt holes install in only one position.

·        Install pilot adapter/spacer in crankshaft.

·        Remove 7 bolts that retain existing bellhousing from your new C-4 transmission. Do not disturb the pump. If gasket is disturbed consult transmission repair shop.

·        Install new bellhousing and tighten bolts to 35 ft. lbs.

·        If you are installing a used C-4 it is a good idea to install a new front seal at this time

·        Install 3/8” fine thread drive stud extensions on torque converter using loctite and tighten.

·        Do not attempt to install converter on flexplate then attach to transmission. Front seal or pump damage are likely to result.

·        Lubricate drive yoke on converter with ATF and slide onto input shaft. Rotate converter to insure engagement into pump. Take care not to damage pump seal.

·        You are now ready to install transmission on engine, but first rotate converter to align drain plug with access hole in flexplate. Some converters have 2 drain plugs.

·        Align 4 studs on torque converter with matching holes in flexplate.

·        Bolt bellhousing to engine block using 4 new hex allen bolts.

·        Install and tighten accessible nuts on converter studs, then rotate engine to access remaining studs.

·        Install vacuum line from modulator on side of transmission to intake manifold vacuum source. Do not use ported vacuum from carburetor.

·        Connect the cooler lines to a good quality cooler. The cooler your C-4 operates, the longer it will last!

·        A kick down rod from the carburetor arm to the kickdown arm on transmission aids drivability. This connects to a separate arm on carburetor, not throttle arm. Adjust for correct downshift. Lengthening the rod will cause downshift to occur with less throttle pressure.

·        Install vacuum line from intake manifold to modulator on transmission.

·        Install starter drive on a 360/390 FE type starter. This is the newer positive engagement type. Replace starter gear with the one included in kit.

·        Install starter. A spacer is provided if starter drive drags on ring gear.

·        Connect shift linkage. If using floor shift type, shifters from early Mustangs and Pintos mount easily and give proper shift throw and pattern. Pinto handles are taller than Mustang.

·        Fill Transmission with Type-F  ATF.  Final level is found hot, idling in neutral.

·        Connect neutral safety switch in start circuit. Do not operate vehicle if it can be started with shifter in other than “P” or “N” position

Custom parts:

·        Driveshaft will typically need to be lengthened about 3”.

·        67 Mustang rear mount works well for most car installations. F-M # 270-2501

·        Driveshaft yoke spline changed in 1957 to fine spline. 54-56 used coarse spline and needs to be changed to match C-4. Neither style will fit C-4.

·        On truck installations check bellhousing mount condition. Upper mount Federal Mogul # 270-2119, lower 270-2121

Thank you, and enjoy your new transmission.
